Rocket Lab delivered on the Space Force's Victus Haze responsive-space contract by beating every timeline the service set. The company launched its Pioneer spacecraft on Electron 16 hours and 42 minutes after the June 19 notice to launch, commissioned the satellite in 38 hours against a 72-hour deadline, and completed rendezvous, monitoring and photography of a target satellite in under 59 hours against an 84-hour deadline. Rocket Lab acted as launch provider, spacecraft builder and on-orbit operator on a single mission, a delivery model the Space Force has been trying to prove out with commercial vendors.

SpaceX flew Transporter-17 from Vandenberg at 3:12 a.m. Eastern on July 7, deploying 81 payloads that included Spire's ten satellites, four Canadian spacecraft from GHGSat, EarthDaily Analytics and the University of Victoria, Apex Space's first Nova bus, Planet's Pelican-11 tech demonstrator, the first Muon-built FireSat satellites for the Earth Fire Alliance, and City Labs' BOHR, described as the first commercial nuclear-powered payload. The manifest lands as rideshare customers say SpaceX is no longer taking Transporter reservations beyond late 2028 or early 2029, and Arianespace signed an MoU with Infinite Orbits to study geostationary orbit (GEO) rideshare services in 2029.

The Space Force added Relativity Space and Impulse Space to the National Security Space Launch Phase 3 Lane 1 IDIQ, joining SpaceX, ULA, Blue Origin, Rocket Lab and Stoke Space in the pool eligible to bid on individual military missions. Iridium closed its acquisition of the remaining 61% of Aireon for about $366.7 million, half in cash and half as a one-year seller loan, days before its planned $8 billion sale to Rocket Lab. And the FCC is set to vote July 22 on the Space Modernization Order rewriting Part 25 satellite and Earth station rules.

Rideshare panic builds as SpaceX slots close and Arianespace targets 2029 GEO service

SpaceX has stopped taking Transporter reservations beyond late 2028 or early 2029, according to partners and competitors cited around the Transporter-17 launch, prompting what one rival executive called panic across smallsat operators. On the same day, Arianespace signed a memorandum of understanding with French servicing company Infinite Orbits to study direct-to-GEO rideshare launches from 2029, either as full Ariane 64 flights or as piggyback slots around larger satellites.

Space Force adds Relativity and Impulse to national security launch pool

The Space Force added Relativity Space and Impulse Space to the National Security Space Launch (NSSL) Phase 3 Lane 1 IDIQ, joining SpaceX, United Launch Alliance, Blue Origin, Rocket Lab and Stoke Space in the pool eligible to bid on individual military launches. Relativity brings the medium-lift Terran R rocket, which has yet to fly, while Impulse contributes orbital transfer vehicles and a high-energy kick stage designed to move satellites from low Earth orbit (LEO) to GEO and beyond.

FCC teed up for July 22 vote on satellite licensing overhaul

FCC Chair Brendan Carr said the commission is expected to vote July 22 on the Space Modernization Order, an omnibus revision to how satellite and Earth station operations are licensed. The Satellite Industry Association's Tom Stroup said the group is pleased with efforts to streamline application processing and improve predictability for operators. The FCC also plans a separate track for feedback on establishing a pathway to test experimental technology in orbit without a commercial license.

Firefly books $13M NASA JPL subcontract for SkyFall Mars aeroshell

Firefly Aerospace disclosed a $13 million subcontract from NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory to manufacture, test and deliver the aeroshell, comprising heatshield and backshell, for the SkyFall mission to Mars, targeted for launch in late 2028. SkyFall will deploy three heritage Mars helicopters using a mid-air release known as the SkyFall Maneuver. Firefly will build the structure at its Rocket Ranch in Briggs, Texas through the new Gloworks innovation lab and deliver it to JPL for integration.
