The briefing

SpaceX launched Northrop Grumman's Mission Robotic Vehicle and three Mission Extension Pods from Cape Canaveral at 5:15 p.m. Eastern on July 21, sending the first robotically dexterous commercial servicer of its kind toward geosynchronous transfer orbit. The vehicle carries the Naval Research Laboratory and DARPA-funded RSGS payload of two robotic arms and is designed to install propulsion modules on customer satellites for up to eight additional years of service, with initial pods contracted to Intelsat and Optus and Luxembourg's SES named as a client. Falcon 9 first stage B1069 was expended after a record 32 flights.

Northrop Grumman offset the servicing milestone with a fresh setback on its solid rocket motor line. In second-quarter earnings, the company took an additional $91 million unfavorable adjustment on the GEM 63XL program used on ULA's Vulcan Centaur, on top of a $71 million first-quarter charge, and CEO Kathy Warden said a redesigned component has completed a successful static fire but the redesigned motors will not begin delivery until year-end. Vulcan has not returned to flight since a February booster anomaly, and the delivery slip narrows ULA's window to resume national security launches this year.

Regulators kept moving in parallel. The FCC will consider a proposal on August 6 to open more than 225 MHz of unlicensed Part 15 spectrum, including Wi-Fi and Bluetooth bands, to direct communications between everyday devices and satellites, on top of the July 22 Space Modernization Order vote already teed up.

SpaceX launched Northrop Grumman's Mission Robotic Vehicle and three Mission Extension Pods to geosynchronous transfer orbit at 5:15 p.m. Eastern on July 21 from Cape Canaveral. The MRV, carrying the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory and DARPA-backed RSGS twin-arm payload, will spend roughly a year climbing to GEO before installing the pods on satellites operated by Intelsat, Optus and SES, extending each spacecraft's life by up to eight years across a 15-year operating window.

FCC sets August 6 vote to open Wi-Fi and Bluetooth bands to direct satellite links

The FCC said it will consider a proposal on August 6 to allow unlicensed Part 15 wireless devices, including Wi-Fi routers, Bluetooth speakers and smart meters, to communicate directly with satellites across more than 225 MHz of spectrum on a non-interference basis. The move follows more than $40 billion of direct-to-device spectrum deals since 2024 and lands alongside the previously scheduled July 22 vote on the FCC's broader Space Modernization Order rewriting Part 25 satellite licensing.

MDA Space UK wins pre-authorization from OHB for ESA Argonaut lunar LiDAR

MDA Space's UK division secured a Pre-Authorization to Proceed from Germany's OHB System AG to supply two flight units of its LEIA LiDAR sensor for the European Space Agency's Argonaut lunar lander, announced at the Farnborough International Airshow. The sensor performs 3D scanning for autonomous hazard detection and safe-site selection during descent; Thales Alenia Space is prime contractor and OHB delivers guidance, navigation and control.

Lockheed Martin and Venus Aerospace pair rotating-detonation engine with long-range fires

Lockheed Martin and Venus Aerospace signed a joint technology development agreement to evaluate and mature Venus's Rotating Detonation Rocket Engine for future long-range precision fires, moving the propulsion architecture from flight demonstration toward operational applications. The partnership pairs Venus's flight-tested engine with Lockheed's weapon integration and production capacity to assess range, speed and manufacturability against Department of War requirements.

Germany's deltaVision closes €10.2M for propulsion valves and in-space refueling roadmap

Munich-based spacecraft component developer deltaVision closed its first funding round at €10.2 million ($11.6 million), led by KT Ventures and Valemount Capital with participation from Futury Capital, to scale valve and propulsion component production to 5,000 units per year. The 125-person, profitable company counts more than 60 customers including primes and agencies and is working on ESA's Argonaut lander, with a roadmap toward interoperable in-orbit refueling systems.
