Rocket Lab Posts Record $234M Quarter, Signs Kepler for Neutron and Warns 2026 Debut Is Slipping

OST Daily August 11, 2026 — Rocket Lab set a fresh quarterly revenue record and booked Kepler as a Neutron customer while telling investors the window for a 2026 Neutron debut is narrowing, MDA Space reversed a year of shrinking backlog with $809 million in Q2 orders, and Voyager and Lockheed Martin picked up new Space Force and Missile Defense Agency work.

The briefing

Rocket Lab delivered its strongest quarter to date and told investors the debut of Neutron may slip out of 2026. Second-quarter revenue reached a record $234 million, up 62% year-over-year, with backlog expanding to $2.36 billion and CEO Peter Beck saying more than $1 billion of new launch and space systems contracts have been signed so far in the third quarter. The company said Stage 1 tank production remains aligned with a Q4 2026 pad delivery target, while the end-of-year launch window is narrowing and first-flight timing depends on qualification testing later this year.

MDA Space turned its order book in the other direction. Q2 revenue rose 33.6% to $498.6 million and backlog grew for the first time in a year, closing at $4.0 billion after $808.9 million in new orders, a book-to-bill of 1.6. The largest single addition was a $688 million Canadian Space Agency follow-on for a fourth RADARSAT Constellation Mission satellite, alongside payload work for Japan's future defense communications satellite via Mitsubishi Electric and antennas for BAE Systems on the U.S. Space Force's medium Earth orbit (MEO) Epoch 2 missile-warning constellation.

Defense procurement kept moving in parallel. Voyager Technologies won a Space Force Space Systems Command contract to develop a flight-ready waveform and demonstrate space-to-space communications for the Department of Defense's resilient data transport architecture, and Lockheed Martin was selected by the Missile Defense Agency for the M&S Vistas Framework to modernize the agency's Objective Simulation Framework for missile-defense testing. In Japan, an H3 rocket successfully placed the Michibiki 7 QZSS navigation satellite into transfer orbit, MHI's first return to flight of the two-engine, two-booster H3 configuration since the December failure that lost Michibiki 5.

Kepler books first dedicated Neutron mission for 2028 optical relay expansion

Kepler Communications signed its first dedicated launch, selecting Neutron for a 2028 mission from Wallops to deploy an undisclosed number of optical relay satellites. Kepler currently operates 33 satellites and said its Tranche 2 vehicles will support up to 100 Gbps, versus 2.5 Gbps today, while remaining compatible with the earlier generation. Previous Kepler satellites have shared rides on vehicles including SpaceX's Falcon 9.

MDA Space books $809M in Q2 orders and reverses a year of backlog erosion

MDA Space reported Q2 revenue of $498.6 million, up 33.6% year-over-year, and $808.9 million in new orders for a book-to-bill of 1.6, lifting backlog to $4.0 billion from $3.7 billion at the end of Q1. The largest addition was a $688 million Canadian Space Agency follow-on for a fourth RADARSAT Constellation Mission satellite, alongside a Mitsubishi Electric contract for the digital payload on Japan's future defense communications satellite and a BAE Systems selection for antennas on the U.S. Space Force's MEO Epoch 2 missile-warning constellation.

MDA Space pivots Canadarm3 investment to lunar surface after Gateway pause

MDA Space CEO Mike Greenley said the company will repurpose its Canadarm3 robotics investment toward future logistics activities on the lunar surface following NASA's March pause of the Gateway station, with Canadian Moon work continuing 'full steam ahead.' The scope of MDA's roughly $720 million contract with the Canadian government is unchanged, though the intended application is shifting. The Canadarm3 program generated $99.5 million CAD in Q2 for MDA's robotics division, about a fifth of quarterly revenue.

Voyager wins Space Force contract for resilient space-to-space communications

Voyager Technologies won a Space Force Space Systems Command contract to develop space-to-space communication capabilities for the Department of Defense's resilient data transport architecture. Voyager will design a flight-ready waveform capable of operating across multiple orbits with defined weight, power and design-life requirements, and will conduct an on-orbit communication demonstration, leveraging its radiation-hardened electronics and RF payload heritage.

Lockheed Martin picked for MDA missile-defense modeling and simulation modernization

Lockheed Martin said it was selected by the Missile Defense Agency for the M&S Vistas Framework contract, developing, evolving, modernizing and sustaining the agency's Objective Simulation Framework, a virtual testing environment for the U.S. missile-defense system. The award will move the environment toward cloud-based infrastructure and expand engineering capacity in partnership with MDA's Directorate of Engineering, building on Lockheed's decades of operational missile-defense work.

H3 returns two-engine, two-booster variant to flight with Michibiki 7

A Japanese H3-22S rocket lifted off from Tanegashima on August 10 and deployed the 4.9-ton Michibiki 7 QZSS navigation satellite into its planned transfer orbit 29 minutes later. It is the first flight of this H3 configuration since a December 2025 failure destroyed Michibiki 5, an anomaly linked to payload fairing separation shocks that damaged the satellite and payload adapter and caused a hydrogen pressure loss on the upper stage. Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and JAXA are discussing raising H3 capacity from six to eight launches per year.
