Rocket Lab Clears Antitrust Review on Iridium and Files Its S-4, Space Force Splits $60M Across Five Data-Network Vendors

OST Daily August 14, 2026 — Rocket Lab's Iridium acquisition cleared the Hart-Scott-Rodino waiting period and moved to the Form S-4 and FCC license-transfer stages, the Space Force spread $60 million across five companies to test connections into SpaceX's Space Data Network backbone, and Space Kinetic drew $50 million to build a centrifugal satellite-deployment system.

The briefing

Rocket Lab moved its Iridium acquisition past the first regulatory gate, announcing that the Hart-Scott-Rodino waiting period expired on August 12 and that it has filed its Form S-4 with the SEC and joint FCC applications to transfer Iridium's licenses. Iridium CEO Matt Desch told employees the companies are still targeting a mid-2027 close. Alongside the update, Rocket Lab replaced its prior at-the-market equity program with a new agreement covering the unsold portion, up to roughly $1.94 billion in stock, earmarked to fund cash payments for the Iridium deal and reduce its $3.6 billion bridge loan commitment.

Voyager Technologies raised its full-year revenue guidance from roughly $240 million in May to about $290 million after closing its July acquisition of Astrobotic. The Denver company signed $113 million of new orders in the second quarter against $53 million delivered, a 2.1 book-to-bill and a record $336 million backlog, with three-quarters of new orders tied to Golden Dome work. CFO Phil De Sousa said the quarter's backlog included nothing from the Astrobotic deal, leaving the acquisition's bookings contribution to show up in later periods.

On the Pentagon side, Space Systems Command spread $60 million across Amazon Leo for Government, Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, Rocket Lab and York Space Systems to prototype how outside satellites plug into the SpaceX-built Space Data Network backbone, an early move to keep the $2.29 billion mesh architecture multi-vendor. Space Kinetic drew a separate $50 million Other Transaction Authority award to develop Whirlwind, a centrifugal deployment system for small maneuverable satellites, its largest contract to date. Firefly Aerospace added a Defense Innovation Unit and Space Development Agency contract to complete a preliminary design review for an Elytra deorbit mission.

Rocket Lab replaces ATM program with $1.94B facility to fund Iridium cash

RKLB

Rocket Lab entered a replacement at-the-market equity distribution agreement with Deutsche Bank Securities and Wells Fargo Securities covering up to about $1.944 billion of common stock, carrying forward the unsold amount from its May 2026 program with no increase in the aggregate offered. The company said any net proceeds are intended to fund part of the cash payments for the Iridium acquisition and reduce commitments under its $3.6 billion senior secured bridge facility.

Space Force splits $60M across five vendors to plug into SpaceX's Space Data Network

SpaceX LMT

Space Systems Command awarded $60 million to Amazon Leo for Government, Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, Rocket Lab and York Space Systems, giving each $10 million on fixed-price contracts for up to nine months of multi-vendor connectivity prototyping and $2 million under six-month OTAs for the planned space exchange point concept. The work will test how commercial systems connect to the Space Data Network backbone SpaceX is building under a separate $2.29 billion award.

Space Kinetic wins $50M Space Force OTA for centrifugal Whirlwind system

Space Kinetic disclosed a $50 million Other Transaction Authority award from the Space Force to develop Whirlwind, an electromechanical system that flings ruggedized microsatellites from a host spacecraft using centrifugal acceleration in place of chemical propulsion. CEO Ryan Sullivan said the award, the company's largest to date, follows a $12 million seed round in 2025 and is aimed at bringing drone-style economics and short-life, high-maneuverability payloads into orbit.

Firefly wins DIU and Space Development Agency (SDA) contract to design Elytra deorbit mission

FLY

Firefly Aerospace announced a new contract with the Defense Innovation Unit and Space Development Agency to complete a preliminary design review for an on-orbit deorbit mission using its Elytra spacecraft, tied to White House direction to prioritize orbital debris mitigation. CEO Jason Kim said the design lets Elytra rendezvous with and deorbit end-of-life satellites of varying sizes, and Firefly will be eligible to compete for the follow-on launch and operations phase after PDR.

Spire wins $3.7M NOAA award for radio-occultation weather data

SPIR

NOAA awarded Spire Global a $3.7 million contract for GNSS radio-occultation weather data from September 18 through December 1, 2026, including the first procurement of RO profiles with Temporal Resolution Enhancements as a distinct commercial deliverable. The award follows an $11.2 million 2025 NOAA contract under the Commercial Weather Data Program and a separate $3 million, six-month Hyperspectral Microwave Sounder extension announced earlier this month.
