OST Daily August 28, 2026 — The European Space Agency signed the first European Launcher Challenge contracts, committing €543.6 million across Isar Aerospace, Rocket Factory Augsburg and PLD Space against a hard end-2027 orbital deadline, Arianespace flew Ariane 6 on its first mission to geostationary transfer orbit to deliver Eumetsat's MTG-I2, and Space Systems Command awarded LeoLabs a $20.68 million prototype agreement to adapt its transportable Scout radar for national-security work.

In Europe, ESA signed the first contracts under its European Launcher Challenge, committing €543.6 million across Isar Aerospace (€197.8M), Rocket Factory Augsburg (€186.9M) and PLD Space (€158.9M), with each award conditional on reaching orbit by end-2027 and demonstrating rocket upgrades by end-2028. MaiaSpace was left out of this tranche, with ESA saying contracting is expected to resume in the coming weeks. Hours earlier, Arianespace's Ariane 6 flew VA270 from Kourou at 22:11 CEST, placing Eumetsat's MTG-I2 imager into geostationary transfer orbit and completing the first MTG family. It was Ariane 6's fourth flight of 2026 and its first GTO mission.

On the U.S. side, Space Systems Command awarded LeoLabs a $20.68 million Prototype Other Transaction Agreement for a modified Scout mobile radar to support national-security space domain awareness, the company's largest defense award to date and its first direct Space Force contract for the transportable system already deployed in the Indo-Pacific. In Canada, MDA Space asked ISED for S-band spectrum to build SpaceRAN, a 170-satellite direct-to-device constellation with an initial 96-spacecraft phase targeted for 2029, though CEO Mike Greenley told analysts on the Q2 call that SpaceRAN is not yet in MDA's funded pipeline.

Elsewhere, Karman Holdings completed its £70 million ($95 million) purchase of UK missile-components maker Walker Precision Engineering on August 28, funded by a $100 million term-loan increase that lifts principal to $863,961,000 and gives the Huntington Beach supplier its first European site alongside 17 locations across eight U.S. states. Over the weekend NASA is set to launch the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope on Falcon Heavy at 7:26 a.m. EDT on August 30, and ESA will make targeted reentries of the last two Cluster satellites on August 31 and September 1.

ESA signs €543.6M in first European Launcher Challenge contracts

The European Space Agency signed the first contracts under its European Launcher Challenge, committing €543.6 million across three providers: €197.8 million to Isar Aerospace, €186.9 million to Rocket Factory Augsburg, and €158.9 million to PLD Space. Each contract is split into a Component A that funds operational launches once the company reaches orbit by end-2027, and a Component B co-funding rocket upgrades to be demonstrated by end-2028. MaiaSpace was not among the awardees, with ESA saying the contract award process with the company is expected to resume in the coming weeks.

Ariane 6 delivers Eumetsat's MTG-I2 on first GTO mission

Arianespace launched Ariane 6 flight VA270 from Europe's Spaceport in French Guiana at 22:11 CEST on August 27, placing Eumetsat's Meteosat Third Generation Imager-2 into geostationary transfer orbit. It was Ariane 6's fourth mission of the year, its eighth operational flight, and its first mission to GTO, completing the first MTG family with a satellite that will image weather over Europe and northern Africa every 2.5 minutes. ESA said the launch keeps Ariane 6 on track for three or four more flights this year.

LeoLabs wins $20.68M Space Force Scout radar OTA

Space Systems Command awarded LeoLabs a $20.68 million Prototype Other Transaction Agreement to deliver a Scout mobile radar system modified for national-security missions, its largest defense award to date. Scout is a container-sized transportable radar unveiled in April 2025, and LeoLabs deployed its first unit to the Indo-Pacific in June, where it began tracking Chinese reconnaissance satellites and China's spaceplane within hours of turn-on. The award follows a December contract with the Office of Space Commerce and Space Force to feed LeoLabs' catalog into the Commerce Department's TraCSS traffic-management tool.

MDA Space files for 170-satellite SpaceRAN direct-to-device constellation

MDA Space is seeking access to the AWS-4 S-band (2000-2020 MHz and 2180-2200 MHz) from Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada to build SpaceRAN, a planned 170-satellite direct-to-device constellation in 750-kilometer low Earth orbits. The company laid out a two-phase build in a July 13 filing: 96 satellites across two planes by 2029 covering Canada and the 41-83 degrees north band, then a third plane to reach global coverage. CEO Mike Greenley told analysts on MDA's Q2 call that SpaceRAN is not yet in the company's funded pipeline.

NASA readies Nancy Grace Roman for August 30 Falcon Heavy launch

NASA said the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope is set to launch on Falcon Heavy at 7:26 a.m. EDT on Sunday, August 30, from Kennedy Space Center Launch Complex 39A, heading to a large orbit around the Sun-Earth L2 point. Roman pairs a 300-megapixel infrared Wide Field Instrument with a Coronagraph technology demonstrator to study dark energy, dark matter and exoplanets, with a five-year primary mission designed to support an additional five-year extension. NASA said Roman is designed to be refuelable, though L2 servicing is not currently available.

L3Harris demonstrates Army networking at Lightning Surge and mobile counter-drone at Project Convergence

L3Harris demonstrated integrated mission networking that let dispersed U.S. Army formations collect, share and act on battlefield information during the Army's Lightning Surge exercises, under its role supplying the transport layer for the Army's NGC2 command-and-control program. Separately at Project Convergence-Capstone 6, L3Harris and ARX Robotics UK integrated the CORVUS-RAVEN passive counter-drone sensor onto ARX GEREON uncrewed ground vehicles, showing how robotic platforms can reposition passive sensing into forward areas without exposing operators.
