Rocket Lab Terminates $3.6B Bridge as Iridium Lenders Consent, Open Cosmos Raises €300M, and Vega-C Orbits FLEX and Sentinel-3C

OST Daily September 15, 2026 — Rocket Lab said it has raised $1.944 billion through its ATM program and terminated the $3.6 billion bridge facility backing the Iridium acquisition, Iridium's lenders formally consented to the change of control, Open Cosmos closed a €300 million European growth round, and Avio's Vega-C delivered ESA's FLEX and Copernicus Sentinel-3C from Kourou.

The briefing

Rocket Lab said it has raised about $1.944 billion in gross proceeds by selling roughly 29.3 million shares under its at-the-market program and has terminated in full the $3.6 billion 364-day bridge facility that Deutsche Bank and Wells Fargo committed for the Iridium acquisition. Iridium's required lenders signed a fourth amendment to its credit agreement that carves the deal out of the change-of-control test, so $1.775 billion of term loans can stay outstanding after closing under a Rocket Lab USA guarantee, with the margin stepping up to SOFR plus 2.50% to 3.00% depending on Rocket Lab's ratings.

European growth capital kept flowing. Open Cosmos closed a €300 million ($348.6 million) round led by Lightrock with ETF Partners, Institut Català de Finances and Entrepreneurs First to expand its four European satellite factories and its UK, Spanish, Portuguese and Greek engineering base, a week after The Exploration Company's $450 million Series C. Avio flew the day's headline mission, lofting ESA's FLEX fluorescence explorer and the Copernicus Sentinel-3C ocean and land satellite from Kourou at 01:21 UTC on its second Vega-C flight run without Arianespace, with CEO Giulio Ranzo pointing to an early-December IRIDE launch to close 2026.

The procurement fight over Blue Origin's $700 million Mars Telecommunications Network award sharpened. Rocket Lab filed a protest with the Government Accountability Office on Friday, arguing NASA's selection appears inconsistent with congressional eligibility criteria and that the review of its technical volume was punitive; Blue Origin, which is working toward a 2028 launch, warned any delay could cost the Mars window. At AFA in National Harbor, Air Force Secretary Troy Meink publicly acknowledged for the first time that the United States has deployed on-orbit space control weapons, declining to describe the systems.

Open Cosmos raises €300M to expand European satellite manufacturing

Open Cosmos closed a €300 million ($348.6 million) funding round led by Lightrock, with ETF Partners, Institut Català de Finances and Entrepreneurs First joining alongside international investors, cofounder and CEO Rafel Jorda Siquier said. The company will expand its four European satellite-manufacturing facilities and grow engineering, manufacturing and software teams in the UK, Spain, Portugal and Greece, which collectively employ around 400 people, a week after The Exploration Company's $450 million Series C. Separately, Impulse Space announced a $308 million extension to its Series D round, taking that round to $808 million.

Avio flies Vega-C with ESA's FLEX and Copernicus Sentinel-3C

HO

Avio's Vega-C rocket lifted off from the Guiana Space Centre at 01:21 UTC on September 15, deploying the 1,143-kilogram Copernicus Sentinel-3C into an 814-kilometer orbit about an hour into the mission before releasing ESA's roughly 400-kilogram FLEX fluorescence explorer 56 minutes later. It was Avio's second Vega-C flight since taking over launch operations from Arianespace, and CEO Giulio Ranzo said the next Vega-C mission is expected in early December carrying satellites for Italy's IRIDE Earth observation constellation.

Rocket Lab files GAO protest of Blue Origin's $700M Mars relay award

RKLB

Rocket Lab filed a protest with the US Government Accountability Office on Friday challenging NASA's selection of Blue Origin for the $700 million Mars Telecommunications Network, saying the award appears inconsistent with eligibility criteria mandated by Congress and that NASA's review of Rocket Lab's technical volume was punitive and inconsistent. Blue Origin, which is working toward a 2028 launch with limited Mars windows, said any delay would greatly risk timely deployment of the relay.

Air Force secretary confirms US has deployed space control weapons in orbit

Air Force Secretary Troy Meink confirmed at AFA's Air, Space & Cyber Conference in National Harbor that the United States now has on-orbit space control weapons capable of defending the joint force against hostile action, the first public acknowledgement by a senior official that the US has fielded orbital weapons. Meink declined to describe the systems or testing history, citing deterrence, and pointed to years of Chinese and Russian counterspace development as context.

Eutelsat says its recent orders put about 1,300 OneWeb satellites in orbit in 2030

ETL

Eutelsat said the OneWeb orders it has placed since late 2025 will leave some 1,300 OneWeb satellites in orbit in 2030, built from successive bulk purchases of Gen 1 replacement satellites and Gen 1.5 models before a full transition of OneWeb customers to the IRIS² network, with both commercial and government capacity, early next decade. The company began ordering Gen 1 replacements in late 2025 and into 2026 with two Airbus Defence and Space orders totalling 440 satellites, and more recently contracted for an additional 229.
