NASA Adds Three SpaceX Crew Missions for $946M Through 2030, ESA Confirms Ariane 6 Delays After the Turbopump Anomaly, and Iridium Heads to Thursday's Vote on the Rocket Lab Merger

OST Daily September 21, 2026 — NASA modified its Commercial Crew contract to add Crew-15, Crew-16 and Crew-17 to SpaceX for $946 million, taking the SpaceX total to $5.92 billion through 2030; ESA said it is aware of delays to the Ariane 6 schedule as ArianeGroup and Arianespace adjust the 2026 manifest for extra production-line checks; and Iridium disclosed three shareholder suits and supplemental proxy disclosures ahead of its September 24 special meeting on the Rocket Lab deal, still targeted to close in mid-2027.

The briefing

NASA modified its Commercial Crew Transportation Capability contract to add Crew-15, Crew-16 and Crew-17 to SpaceX, a firm fixed-price award of $946 million, lifting SpaceX's total to $5.92 billion and 17 missions with performance through 2030 and readiness dates in 2027 and 2028. In Europe, ESA said it is aware of delays to the Ariane 6 schedule after reports of an August turbopump anomaly, and ArianeGroup and Arianespace said the 2026 manifest must be adjusted for additional production-line checks while the ramp to 9 to 10 launches a year stays on track for 2027.

Iridium confirmed three shareholder lawsuits over its sale to Rocket Lab and made supplemental disclosures to its proxy, including Evercore's $54.00-per-share implied value for the merger consideration, ahead of Thursday's special meeting, where stockholders of record as of August 21 vote on a deal Iridium still expects to close in mid-2027, a week after Rocket Lab terminated the $3.6 billion bridge behind the cash portion. SpaceX flew its 81st Starlink mission of the year from Vandenberg on Saturday, with the booster landing on the droneship on its 17th flight.

In defense, Space Force Mission Delta 2 will stand up a prototype software environment this fall to fuse commercial space-tracking data into operational space domain awareness systems, its commander said in Maui. The Defense Innovation Unit and Space Systems Command (SSC) unveiled GHOST-R, a 2028 geosynchronous orbit (GEO) reconnaissance prototype under SSC's RG-XX program of record, with True Anomaly and Northrop Grumman building the vehicles. With TraCSS in limbo, US and European officials said the EU's space surveillance and tracking partnership, which added four members in June, is poised to set global safety norms.

NASA adds three SpaceX crew flights worth $946M through 2030

SpaceX

NASA modified its Commercial Crew Transportation Capability contract to award SpaceX three additional missions, Crew-15, Crew-16 and Crew-17, at a firm fixed-price value of $946 million including ground, launch, in-orbit and recovery operations plus cargo and lifeboat services. The modification lifts SpaceX's total CCtCap value to $5.92 billion, runs through 2030 with mission readiness in 2027 and 2028, and follows last week's signal that NASA is preparing to order two additional Starliner missions from Boeing.

ESA confirms Ariane 6 delays as ArianeGroup and Arianespace adjust the 2026 manifest after a turbopump anomaly

The European Space Agency confirmed it is aware of delays to the Ariane 6 launch schedule after reports that an engine turbopump anomaly was found during ground evaluations in August, while declining to comment on the root cause.

Space Force to prototype software fusing commercial and military space tracking

Colonel Barry Croker, head of Space Force Mission Delta 2, said at the AMOS conference in Maui that the service will launch a prototype software environment this fall to automate the integration of commercial and military space-tracking data, aiming for a minimum viable product that biases toward timeliness over highest-fidelity analysis. Commercial data acquired via the Joint Commercial Operations cell currently runs on a parallel system to operational space domain awareness computers, a gap Space Command's General Stephen Whiting flagged as constraining precise targeting of adversary satellites.

DIU and Space Systems Command unveil GHOST-R GEO reconnaissance prototype

NOC

The Defense Innovation Unit and Space Systems Command announced GHOST-R, a joint prototype effort to bring low-cost reconnaissance to geosynchronous orbit under SSC's RG-XX program of record, with a launch slated for 2028.

EU space tracking program gains four new members as TraCSS wavers

At the AMOS conference in Maui, US and European officials said the EU Space Surveillance and Tracking Partnership is gaining momentum as the future of the US Commerce Department's TraCSS civil space-traffic system remains in limbo, with Belgium, Bulgaria, Lithuania and Luxembourg joining in June, a month before the program's tenth anniversary. About 95 percent of European satellite operators already participate in EU SST's data exchange, and the EU's draft law on space operations would require any company operating satellites for European use to prove participation, according to a senior EU official.

Crew-13 enters quarantine for an early-October launch as Progress 96 heads to the station

SpaceX

NASA and SpaceX are targeting early October for the Crew-13 launch, and its four astronauts, Canada's Joshua Kutryk, NASA's Jessica Watkins and Luke Delaney and Roscosmos cosmonaut Sergey Teteryatnikov, entered quarantine at Johnson Space Center on September 17 after equipment interface testing at Cape Canaveral that checked suit fit, Dragon seats and communications. The uncrewed Progress 96 cargo ship launched on a Soyuz from Baikonur on September 16 with about three tons of food, fuel and supplies for the Expedition 75 crew, which Kutryk will join for a six-month stay.
