The briefing

Isar Aerospace delivered continental Europe's first fully commercial trip to orbit on Saturday, lifting Spectrum off Andøya Spaceport in Norway at 20:12 UTC and deploying five CubeSats after a circularisation burn. CEO Daniel Metzler said the German company will now focus on scaling launch-vehicle production and working through its order pipeline, with a new headquarters expected to eventually support up to 40 rockets per year. The flight closes out Spectrum's qualification campaign after scrubs stretching back to January and makes Isar the first European Launcher Challenge provider to clear the program's 2027 orbital milestone.

SpaceX, meanwhile, flew the 80th Starlink mission of 2026 from Vandenberg on September 5, with booster B1088 landing for the 19th time. It was the third Starlink flight since launch vice president Kiko Dontchev said future Florida Starlink missions will fly on Starship, with three Starship towers under construction at Kennedy and Cape Canaveral. Planet Labs added the window's clearest capital signal: revenue up 58% year on year to $116.1 million for the quarter ending July 31, with EMEA now 48% of revenue after growing 130%, led by defense and intelligence customers.

At the U.S. Army's Project Convergence, soldiers draped wet T-shirts on overheating Starlink terminals in the Mojave, a field detail that reinforces the service's commercial-first strategy for its NGC2 command-and-control architecture. ESA confirmed on September 3 that BepiColombo's Mercury Transfer Module had separated from the stack, the first step in an arrival sequence ESA says will place two spacecraft in orbit around Mercury in December. On September 9 and 10, ESA Director General Josef Aschbacher will use the International Space Summit in Paris to press European leaders on Europe's ambition for the next era of exploration.

Isar Aerospace reaches orbit on Spectrum's second flight, deploys five CubeSats from Andøya

SpaceX

Isar Aerospace lifted its Spectrum rocket from Andøya Spaceport in Norway at 20:12 UTC on September 5 and, after a circularisation burn, deployed all five CubeSats, marking the first fully commercial orbital launch from continental Europe. CEO Daniel Metzler said the company will now focus on scaling production and working through its order pipeline, with a new headquarters expected to eventually support production of up to 40 rockets per year. ESA said the flight makes Isar the first European Launcher Challenge provider to reach the program's 2027 orbital milestone.

02

SpaceX flies its 80th Starlink mission of 2026 from Vandenberg as B1088 lands for a 19th time

SpaceX

SpaceX launched Starlink 15-24 from Vandenberg Space Launch Complex 4-East at 7:26 a.m. PDT on September 5, deploying 27 Starlink satellites on the company's 80th Starlink mission of 2026 and landing booster B1088 for a 19th time. It was the third Starlink flight since launch vice president Kiko Dontchev said Falcon 9 Starlink launches from Florida have ended, and the company is building three Starship towers in Florida, one at Kennedy's LC-39A and two at Cape Canaveral's SLC-37.

03

Planet Labs revenue grows 58% to $116.1M as EMEA becomes largest region

PL

Planet Labs reported a 58% year-on-year revenue increase to $116.1 million for the three months ending July 31, with defense and intelligence customers driving the biggest gains. EMEA accounted for 48% of revenue and grew 130% year-on-year, ahead of North America at 34% and Asia-Pacific at 16%, with management flagging that capital spending is being raised to keep up with demand.

04

Army Starlink terminals overheat at Project Convergence as soldiers improvise cooling

SpaceX

During Project Convergence Capstone 6 at Fort Irwin in July, 4th Infantry Division soldiers cooled overheating Starlink ground terminals in 100-plus-degree Mojave heat by draping wet T-shirts on the antennas, division commander Maj. Gen. Patrick Ellis said. Brig. Gen. Shane Taylor said there are fixes the Army can make to commercial gear "before we go spend quadruple the cost" on bespoke hardware, as the service settles the NGC2 command-and-control baseline built around Starlink and other commercial systems.

05

BepiColombo sheds its Mercury Transfer Module as ESA lines up Mercury orbit insertion

The European Space Agency confirmed at 15:49 CEST on September 3 that BepiColombo's Mercury Transfer Module had separated from the spacecraft stack, after mission control in Darmstadt waited nearly two hours for the signal to arrive from 200 million kilometers away. Ignacio Tanco, ESA's head of inner Solar System mission operations, told reporters that the separation so close to the Sun was "equivalent to launching a new spacecraft." After an eight-year cruise and nine planetary flybys, it clears the way for the European Mercury Planetary Orbiter and Japan's Mio to become the first two spacecraft in orbit around Mercury in December.

06

International Space Summit convenes in Paris on September 9 and 10 with Europe's exploration ambition on the table

ESA Director General Josef Aschbacher will present what the agency calls a practical pathway for securing Europe's future in exploration at the International Space Summit in Paris on September 9 and 10, convened by French President Emmanuel Macron with world leaders, ministers, industry and astronauts. In the exploration session on the evening of September 9 he will argue that human activity in low Earth orbit is entering a new phase, that the Moon is becoming a destination for sustained operations, and that the foundations for Mars are already being laid, and will ask leaders how much of that future Europe wants to shape.
